May Day
We’re away at the moment (in Honfleur as you’re reading this) so I pre-scheduled this quick post to celebrate May Day.
Rites of Spring festivities were first recorded, apparently, in Roman times, “in honour of the goddess of flowers and fertility, involving athletic games and theatrical performances,” but later descended into events, “notorious for lewd and chaotic behaviour, with the pelting of vegetables, and wild hares and deer being released into the crowds as symbols of fecundity.”
All sounds a lot more fun than maypole dancing!
Anyway, pushed for time, I simply plumped for a playlist featuring the top five songs on Spotify titled ‘May Day’. It’s quite a mash up of styles, but works together well, so get some vegetables at the ready for pelting and take a listen!
I hadn’t heard at least three of these songs before compiling the playlist, but then again I recently read a suggestion that a staggering average of 123,000 new songs are now added to Spotify each and every day …
… it’s no wonder us old gits (too busy avoiding wild deer) can’t keep up any longer!
