In theory these playlists are meant to contain every song/artist mentioned within C69s previous chapter, but I realised this time (with so many music references within the ‘Challenge’) that there does come a point where this is neither practical nor desirable!
Without a bit of pruning, ‘Track 11’s soundtrack would have; a) had a running time of almost two hours, and (more importantly), b) contained some truly awful stuff.
So, with apologies to any fans, here is the list of the artists I’ve chosen (with little regret) to discard; Van Halen, Whitney Houston, Frank Sinatra, Earth, Wind & Fire, Aerosmith, Foreigner, and Chicago. If you wanted all of those included, then you’re probably reading the wrong book anyway.
I must admit, it was particularly enjoyable chopping Whitney while retaining Cilla!
Despite such sweeping edits, this playlist still runs to a pretty lengthy ninety+ minutes, but why not try dipping in; it’s a strange, eclectic collection.
For the more time constrained listener however, as an alternative (given Saturday’s sad news), and in a break with tradition; may I suggest that you pass on the ‘T11’ tunes and listen instead to the short Tom Verlaine tribute playlist I’ve included below.
Ignoring the more obvious (if undoubtedly brilliant) Marquee Moon, Venus, etc. this selection includes;
- my favourite song from the band's second album,
- the song Tom co-wrote, and played guitar on, for Patti Smith’s 'Horses',
- a bit of solo Verlaine, and
- a lovely little tribute song from (Canadian indie band) Alvvays.
Please take a listen, and marvel once more at the genius that was ….
