I've also been fairly surprised by Nick Cave's books, though he can sometimes become a little derivative of Cormac McCarthy. Also, enjoyed 'most' of Janelle Monae's short stories, even if they seemed to rise or fall based on who the co-writer was. Great List!

As regards Nick Cave, I’m in awe of him as a writer, some of his Red Hand Files posts are truly inspiring, but I don’t think he’s yet got it right novelistically. Ass Saw the Angel is interesting but too esoteric, while Bunny Monroe went too far the other way towards populism.
I’m convinced he’s got a classic novel in him, but don’t think we’ve seen it yet.
